After 32 years of long standing service and an impeccable record on board the Naomh Ciarán II, state subsidised service from Baltimore to Cape Clear, skipper Fachtna Ó Drisceoil has been told that his services are no longer required as of Monday the 1st of June.
This shocking news follows on from the recent announcement that the entire crew's wages were being reduced (22% for crew and 27% for the skipper) and in addition the crew would have to work 4 weeks free of charge between May and September this year.
The company has yet to respond to SIPTU's attempts at negotiation over pay issues.
According to the Irish Examiner:
Mr O'Driscoll's company, which won the Government tender (2007) to provide the ferry link 365 days a year receives up to €260,000 annually...
As of 8.30pm on June the 2nd, crew members Noel Ó Drisceoil and John Harrington were informed by telephone that they were suspended with pay pending a disciplinary hearing.
This site has been set up with the overwhelming support of concerned friends and supporters of crew, who are deeply upset and perturbed by these events.
SIPTU has organised a work stoppage strike by the crew on Thursday the 4th of June between 8.30am and 7.30pm on Baltimore pier which we are fully supporting.
This site is now closed for new postings. Many thanks to all who posted their support.

Posted on 2009-06-03 11:45:24 by Ciara Healy O'Driscoll It is a case of history repeating itself, in 2007 Ted and Shane became the first victims.I have been going to cape for 5 years, and i have seen first hand the destruction CDM has tried to cause. He has tried to destroy honest hardworking men who have pride in their jobs, homes and families. He may have taken thier jobs but he will never take thier dignity. I am married to Ciaran (Teds son)and when i married him i married an Island, and i swear i will stand up with my family and fellow Islanders and iradicate this virus. Also what we must remember is that behind CDM is the Puppet Master (MOD), i do not think that he would have the ability to co-ordinate such a vicious attack on all Islanders and ferry workers past and present by himself. The day will come when the smirk will be wiped legally and honestly from the Puppert Masters face and that day will come, patience is a virtue.... |

Posted on 2009-06-03 18:23:43 by John Nyhan Kinsale (Works with Aoife S) I have spent alot of time sailing to Cape Clear and using the ferry service over the years.I feel its a disgrace and outrage at the way these people are being treated.Cape Clear is a beautiful island and the natives and crew deserve alot more respect than this.My thoughts are with you all and you have my full support. |
|
Posted on 2009-06-03 19:32:01 by Grace Brady Naomh Ciarán II is the lifeline of Cape. The work that the crew and skipper do onboard is tireless-they go out in all weather conditions, providing a vital service to the island's links with the mainland. It is not simply a tourist ferry, though the welcoming smiles and chats when the tourists come onboard and the hardwork behind the scenes which goes un-noticed are what makes Cape so memorable for tourists, both when they first arrive and when they reluctantly leave the island. The ferry is also what keeps the vital link of services and mainland support for the islanders who brave the winters on Cape Clear. To say that someone like Fachtna is not required anymore is outrageous and to suggest that pay for crew should be cut is ridiculous. Anyone who even remotely know these great men would never suggest otherwise. Of course, you have my support, anything to keep a lifeline of one of my favourite places on earth alive! |

Posted on 2009-06-03 21:57:56 by Ray O Leary I been going to cape for the past few years and was shocked this summer when i went back not to find Ted on Board and then i heard of a young lad Shane who also lost his job when the present operator took over. Now i hear after the last clear out of crew 2 years ago that the same is again happening.Experienced men are hard to find has this man any cop on or does he think he is better than men with 30 and 37 years experience and respect from Island people and people far and near. Its clear all that experience and respect is now gone and these great men walking the roads has their family and friends. |

Surely both Departments have certain questions to answer regarding the mirror images of the tendering processes in both jurisdictions? Might they not have been better in requesting European Funding for a better system of filing? They appear to have great problems with this ... http://nalil.blogspot.com/ |

Posted on 2009-06-04 00:11:32 by Anonymous Caper Mary and Ciaran (cherry picker) I hope you can remember that the Oilean Chleire community bent over backwards to make you feel welcome when you moved here 20 years ago (as we do with all new comers). However this integration process was barely complete when the ideas and ideals of a mighty empire were being hatched. This PROCEDURE which we saw being carried out to Fachtna on Sunday evening is now a well oiled machine. In the early days of the MIGHTY CAMELOT anybody and anyone who stood in the way was merely crushed under foot. As I earlier eluded, this PROCEDURE (though it has evolved slightly now) involved trying to isolate the opponents of CAMELOT by trying to single them out and isolate them and subject them to psychological intimidation. This was always inflicted upon an individual or small groups of people. Unfortunately MANY MANY people have had to suffer in silence, many of whom are no longer on Oilean Chleire. So lads, I know it’s of little consolation but you are not alone. We are all in this together and with Fachtna as Commander in Chief assisted by his three able generals the CAPE CLEAR LIBERATION ARMY will be able to end this madness. |

Posted on 2009-06-04 13:45:29 by Ciara Healy O'Driscoll I have been listening in disgust to the coverage on baltimore pier on the news all morning and CDM is making the "cherry pickers" sound like the bad guy, what we MUST remember is that the cailin oir is a life line to those of us who will not travel to cape with cdm during the summer, winter months we do not travel with him either, on a matter of principal. The cailin oir gave jobs to 2 men cdm shat on in 2007. He stated that he has lost €50,000 a year since the other ferry started id like to see proof of that. I'd say most of the money he has ehm "lost" went to pay for his pubs , b&b's etc ....i wonder what he pays himself for skippering in cape as well as being full time engineer!!!! in rathlin. |

I think you should contact the local and national press to bring this sorry situation to the attention of the general public. |

Of course, I use the term 'recent' in the loosest possible way as I know this problem has been lingering for more than just a few short years. I find myself in a difficult situation being connected in one way or another with both sides of the troubles. However, as a frequent visitor to Cape Clear and having gotten to know many many people there over the years 'idir óg agus aosta' I wish to pledge my for support Fachtna and Helen, the affected crew of the Naomh Ciarán II and their families and to all those who are justly fignting their cause. It saddened me to board the Naomh Ciarán after Concubhars passing a few years ago, but the friendly nod, smile or 'I suppose we'll see you inside for one later' from Fachta (or Ted at the time) made the return trip to Cape Clear all the easier. It is from experience that I can say that I would not expect the same friendliness or 'céad míle fáilte' from the current boat owner... not that he would have a personal vendetta against me, but I believe his personality doesn't lend itself to that level. Posted on 2009-06-04 21:25:58 by Caper all he could say today to radio and television was that the Cherry pickers were destroying him and taking his profits. First of all he must remember he ran his own private boat against Concubhar O Driscoll of which this letter proves and written by himself http://www.flickr.com/photos/capeclearrip/2917614929/sizes/l/ He went full power against concubhar who at that time was receiving at least 120,000 less in Subsidy and was giving his crew a pay rise every year and still he managed to keep running the service without hassel. He also started the cherry picking against another route from schull to Baltimore. So he took on 2 routes and is the original cherry picker to started the trend. All that is wrong now is someone has sour grapes and can't handle a bit of competition, quite sad really. Another point to remember is that a certain number of people were blamed for complaining and causing trouble but the story has extended up to Rathlin and these people knew nothing about us down here and now feel like us, sick to death of this. Well done to everyone who turned out in baltimore today, sent messages of support or have written comments here. Ye were a credit to cape, your home and your families today. We will be the winners at the end of the day. Tiocaidh ar la. |

Posted on 2009-06-04 21:56:20 by Concerned friend of Oileán Chléire I think the Dept of Gaeltacht etc has serious questions to answer about this whole fiasco. For many years Cape had a reliable uncontroversial public ferry service which had the support of the islanders. It is the insistence of the Department against the wishes of the majority of the islanders to go down the private tender route that has brought us to this sorry turn of events. It has been nothing but trouble and dissension since this contract was awarded to a controversial and divisive local figure. It's this arrogant bueracratic attitude of "we know best" that is so infuriating. The whole point of the the ferry grant is to support the Island community and way of life. But the Department's approach is now clearly doing terrible damage to this fragile community. If Cape is to survive as a living community, it cannot afford this type of conflict. So, please please, if the beuracrats are reading this, let muintir Chléire decide for themselves how they want this vital lifeline to be run and managed. Have a referendum on whether the boat should remain in private hands or go back to being run on behalf of the community like it was before under the leadership of the late and lamented Conchubhúir, and his fine successors like Fachtna and Ted. The Ferry Service is the island's lifeline. It's too important to be a plaything of civil servants who don't understand island society. |

Posted on 2009-06-04 22:17:15 by capeman. From the irish times today "A competitor ferry leaves five minutes before our ferry, taking most of the business with it,” Mr O’Driscoll said" Looks like he can't read time or his watch now either because there is never a time when the other ferry leaves 5mins before the Naomh Ciaran 2 unless he leaves early himself like he did today leaving cape clear at 3.15Pm instead of his scheduled time of 4PM !!! |

To clarify "The SON" = SHANE, "Naomh Ciarán II crew member" = FACHTNA. Somebody better jog "Mr O’Driscolls" memory that he also sacked Shane. Does the ALMIGHTY think Shane should sit at home rather than going out and getting himself a new job. |

Posted on 2009-06-04 23:11:57 by Anne State subsidised fery- Taxpayers money - public tender (transparency of this process, dubious)- Obscene treatment of staff. Where is the state department that rubber stamped this skullduggery? Oh yeah! they are still sitting in the Dail pontificating about the economy and creating jobs- and yet they allow 4 hardworking men and the island community to be walked all over for what appears to be nothing but greed and empire building. Does this contractor or state department know that there are LEGAL obligations involved in "securing state funding amd the spending of same" and that there are Employment Laws in this state that we all have to live by. "Accountability" is another term that both the State department and the contractor need to look up the meaning of!! Accountability is actually required when spending taxpayers hard earned money. In relation to the Cherry Picking it may have served the "contractor" well in 1995 if he had thought of "do unto others as you would like done unto you" - |

Posted on 2009-06-04 23:59:59 by Kevin Cottrell In a era where people in the service industry cannot be bothered to salute or talk to people, it was always so refreshing to meet Factna on the cape ferry. He was always jolly, cheerful and he went out of his way to welcome and converse with people. Factna is an asset to any business and if you boss can't see this shame on him. Factna keep the faith and all the people you have touched with your kindness will stand by you and show the good will alway overcome bullies. To the rest of the crew my compliments for standing up for your principles and your fellow crew member. |

Any previous crew and skippers were a delight to travel with, would bend over backwards to do anything big or small and were there day or night whenever they were needed. We placed our trust and lives in these mens hands down through the years and i'm sorry to say the day has come when all this has not only come to an end but to a sad end.CDM has again 2 years on from 2007 put Cape back in the media for all the wrong reasons because this is not how we and others want to see cape. |

Posted on 2009-06-05 20:22:43 by Complainant 1 NALIL blog invited Calmac to respond to the recent document issued by Peter Cardy, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. A Calmac spokesman replied: "I am appalled to have it confirmed at this late stage that such a fundamental and serious failure occurred, the more so since the investigation carried out by the DRD previously dismissed this allegation as being without foundation. Operating without a valid Passenger Certificate is illegal, and regarded in such a serious light that the penalties can even extend to imprisonment, and any breach would be expected to be dealt with firmly at the time by the MCA. It is likely that in such circumstances insurances would be invalid also, and I would have expected the ship to be withdrawn from service immediately, until the situation was rectified. I am puzzled by the reference to the preceding two years. The Passenger Certificate clearly required that MV Canna was surveyed between the end of May and the end of August each year, and CalMac always ensured that the ship was taken out of service in good time to carry out her planned annual refit, and to carry out repairs in order to ensure the ongoing safety of her crew and passengers. At no time would CalMac have ever contemplated operating without valid certification, and did not do so." |

Cléire is a hidden treasure of West Cork and all associated and born to it hold their heads up high when asked where we come from. Yesterday and the last number of days have epitomised the very meaning and sense of community. To see all the Capers & friends stand shoulder to shoulder and stand up for what we believe in was fantastic. This is one man, and only one man, from a greater population, trying to destroy our wonderful island and home through greed and spite. No more. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. Keep up the fight. No give in. |

Posted on 2009-06-06 10:41:37 by roaringwaterbay Hi Sinéad, it seems to me that Calmac is a very powerful, yet very decent & reliable company which does things by the book, more so than any of our two responsible government depts. I cannot help but believe that the tender award up north was a political move (with what purpose???) and the one down here, which has yet to materialise in the shape outlined in the contract, a deal done behind our backs just like other deals ordinary mortals could never make or get through with. I have to sound muddy here - but I trust you get what I mean. |

Posted on 2009-06-06 23:41:30 by Complainant 1 From the £55,000 report into the procurement of the Rathlin Ferry, the "investigators"- i.e ex civil servants wrote "The Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs confirmed that in its experience Mr. O'Driscoll was a potential candidate who had done well on other routes. The Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has since said that "on three occasions financial penalties have been imposed on the operator in accordance with the terms of the contract. They went on to state that “Notwithstanding this however, it is the Department’s considered view that the service provided by Tithe Saoire Cleire Teo to Cleire rates on a par with the majority of other island Ferry Services subsidized by it". And here's the DCRGA reply to paragraph 4.4.3: On Tue, Jun 2, 2009 at 2:46 PM, DCRGA Official wrote .... Regarding your suggestion that this Department recommended Ciarán Ó Drisceoil to DRDNI, I can find no record of such a recommendation on the Department's files. |
